Message from Chairman of The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong

With the proliferation of news sources in this age of information explosion, distinguishing between fact and fiction has become more and more difficult. Journalists must seek to strike a balance between responsibility and freedom as they try to help the public understand the truth through fact-based reporting and fair and balanced analysis. By recognizing the works of outstanding journalists and identifying budding talents, the Hong Kong News Awards are a critical yardstick of professionalism that encourages journalists to abide by their code of practice and professional standards.

For the press, 2015 was a challenging year in terms of news gathering. There were acute controversies over the political reform proposal before the Legislative Council voted on the issue, and those divisions have remained even after the vote. Fierce clashes occurred inside the Legislative Council chamber, in the streets and on university campuses, and young people became politically more active. Economically, the stock market had a roller coaster ride, while the tourism, retail and property industries showed signs of slowing down. In the international arena, wars and both natural and man-made disasters broke out one after another, with Europe torn by a refugee crisis and the whole world threatened by terrorism. The winning entries of Hong Kong News Awards 2015 fully demonstrate the professionalism and dedication of our journalists in fulfilling their responsibility of keeping the public informed in a taxing environment.

On behalf of The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to members of the industry, sponsors and the panel of judges for their participation and support. I would also like to congratulate the awards winners and encourage them to continue to spare no effortsto explore newsworthy topics and produce reports that resonate with the readers.
