Message from Chairman of The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong

In 2010, Hong Kong people witnessed many momentous events that captivated their hearts and minds. Among them were the collapse of several residential buildings in Tokwawan, hijacking of a Hong Kong tour group by a gunman in Manila that led to eight deaths and seven injuries, surging inflation and property prices caused by an influx of foreign capital, and growing concern over a widening wealth gap between the poor and the rich. All these have become the foci of the media and some of their reports are among the entries for this year’s Hong Kong News Awards. In reporting some of these issues, journalists demonstrated their professionalism by having to overcome major difficulties. One of the objectives of The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong in organizing the news awards every year is to encourage our journalists to uphold their work ethic in providing our readers with comprehensive, prompt and accurate information to cope with changes in the global environment.

In recent years, the newspaper industry faces unprecedented challenges, including the possible demise of newspapers. However, we can tell from the development of the Hong Kong press that it is still full of vigour and our newspapers remain popular among our readers. Another objective of the Hong Kong News Awards is to raise the overall standards of the newspaper industry with a view to delivering better quality news reports to the public. Lately, the global environment has experienced turbulent changes, which have imposed greater demands on the skills of our journalists in reporting and analyzing related developments. This year, I look forward to seeing invaluable works of journalism and winning entries that break new grounds.

I would like to express my gratitude to the judges of Hong Kong News Awards for their hard work in assessing the entries.

My heart felt thanks also go to the sponsors of the awards for their patronage, and colleagues in the newspaper industry for their support and participation.
